My Journey as a Candle Business Owner

Kreative Kay Candle Co. began in 2019, during a time when I decided to pour more intention into my life and into myself. I’ve always loved candles. There’s something comforting about them: the glow, the scent, the way they completely change the feel of a space. At the time, though, I didn’t actually know how candles were made.

That curiosity truly sparked when I decided to make candles for my sister’s baby shower. I added a little essential oil, thinking that was all it took. What I quickly learned was that the candle had no hot throw at all and that not all essential oils are safe to burn.

Some can even create toxins when heated.

That moment opened my eyes and pushed me to learn more.

Instead of giving up, I went all in. I researched endlessly, joined candle-making groups, read everything I could, tested over and over again, and learned through a lot of trial and error. Candle making is not easy and it is definitely not inexpensive. I invested a lot of time, money, and energy into learning the craft properly. Wax, wicks, fragrance oils, vessels, testing supplies, it all adds up quickly. But I wanted to do it right.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that candle making is all about testing. Every candle must be tested to make sure the wick, wax, and fragrance oil work together safely and effectively. I worked with multiple suppliers and vendors, constantly testing different combinations until I found what truly worked best.

As my candles improved, friends began asking if they could buy them. At first, I gave them away so they could test them and give honest feedback. Their encouragement meant everything. Around the same time, my husband and family continued to push me, reminding me that this could be something bigger. With their support, I finally took a leap of faith and decided to start my own business.

I built my website myself, designing it from the ground up. It wasn’t perfect, but it was mine, and it represented my heart, my creativity, and my passion.

Then COVID happened.

While working full-time in Human Resources, I was considered essential and still had to show up to work every day during the pandemic. It was a heavy and uncertain time for everyone. Candle making became my escape, my peace. Pouring candles helped keep me grounded, busy, and focused during a season when the world felt so unpredictable.

As my business grew, I felt inspired to expand beyond candles. Because I have sensitive skin myself, I wanted skincare products where I knew exactly what was going into them. I wanted full control over the ingredients, nothing unnecessary, nothing harsh. That’s how my handmade lotions came to life. Just like my candles, they were thoughtfully researched, carefully tested, and made with intention. My friends absolutely loved them and encouraged me to add them to my shop.

Today, I’m incredibly grateful to share my products with you. Every candle and every lotion and all my products are made with care, patience, and purpose. What started as curiosity turned into passion and that passion became Kreative Kay Candle Company, LLC.
